The Buena Vista Police Department would like to make you aware of yet another way thieves are stealing cars.  This method takes almost no effort and in turn... the prevention is just as easy.

The thieves pick a car while it is in a parking lot and then they simply peer into the front window and copy the vehicle identification number (VIN).  Next, they go to the nearest dealer and tell them they have locked their keys in the car and ask that they make a spare key.  Finally, they walk up like they own the car, put the key in the ignition and drive away.

PREVENTION

It is illegal to remove the VIN from the automobile.  However, you may place an index card over it or simply cover half of it with electrical tape.  This simple cost effective method could save your vehicle from being stolen.
